New Claim of Tabletop Nuclear Fusion Disputed

A new tabletop device said to generate a long-sought laboratory version of nuclear fusion has been called into question even before it was formally announced. The device was created in research led by Rusi Taleyarkhan at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. A paper about the new process will be published March 8 in the journal Science. But in an unusual prepublication step Monday, the journal released new information, provided by other researchers at the same laboratory who say the technique does not work.
