The Russian Institute for Medical and Biological Problems has developed a ground version of an improved space greenhouse. “Some 3.5 ounces (100 grams) of edible biological substances can be grown in the greenhouse every five days with little energy consumption,” a senior researcher from the institute, Yuli Berkovich, told Interfax. “We have developed a methodology of evaluating the plant’s quality that will be useful to the cosmonauts during long missions on the International Space Station (ISS) as well as on long interplanetary missions in the future,” he said.
