After the recent success of the space probe and the announcement in the United States of the feasibility of a lunar base by 2015 and one on Mars starting in 2005, more work is being done in Spacelab, the research laboratory for space design of the Milan Polytechnic University, which is studying structures, interiors, and equipment adapted to variable gravity conditions and to confined and extreme environments, such as the one on Mars. Spacelab’s activities is aimed at facing not only the technical difficulties of making an extreme living situation, but also physical and psychological impact that the environment can have on the crew.
