Buoyed by a huge turnout at a kickoff lecture earlier in the week, organizers for Wednesday’s “NASA About Face” rally outside Kennedy Space Center had hoped for big numbers. New Millennium Flight to Send Microprobes to Mars Florida Today
Two small science probes will be sent to Mars in 1999 to demonstrate innovative new technologies brought to the forefront by NASA’s New Millennium program. Under terms of a new agreement between the New Millennium and Mars Exploration programs, the microprobes will hitchhike to Mars aboard NASA’s 1998 Mars Surveyor Lander.

On the morning after they said there might have been life on Mars, the man who predicted it a half-century ago answered every phone call with a groan. “Here we go. I suppose this is about Mars again,” snarled Ray Bradbury, author of “The Martian Chronicles,” a book describing a lush but dying red planet peopled by changelings. Now 75 and living in Los Angeles, prophet had turned skeptic.
