Astronauts crave shrimps with horseradish sauce when in space, according to a study of their eating habits. “That is many astronauts’ favorite dish,” says Martina Heer, nutritionist at the German Aerospace Center in Cologne, Germany. Heer has been researching the causes of eating disorders in space as part of an international study. In her experience, this very spicy dish is popular among astronauts because their sense of taste wanes when in gravity: “We don’t know why that happens yet.” A lack of appetite and not enough movement lead to bone loss, muscle atrophy and other problems.
