The first large project of The Mars Society is the creation of a Mars Arctic Research Station on Devon Island in the Canadian Arctic. This base will allow scientists to test Mars exploration equipment and procedures in the field and under the ideal conditions of the cold and dry Arctic climate.

The manufacturing of the primary structure of the Flashline Mars Arctic Research Station has been completed. At the end of May, the fabrication of the structure was behind schedule, causing some concern that it might not be ready in time to ship to the Arctic for construction this summer. However, as a result of an all-out mobilization of extra workers, double shifts, and weekend work from Infracomp, Mesa Fiberglass and a swarm of hardworking volunteers from the Rocky Mountain Mars Society (RMMS) and Pioneer Astronautics, the job has been done!

The Mars Society and the Discovery Channel have announced a significant partnership designed to involve the whole world in the construction of the society’s Flashline Mars Arctic Research Station. According to a joint press release, “The Mars Society announced today that the Discovery Channel, has become a major sponsor of the Flashline Mars Arctic Research Station, a simulated Mars exploration base slated for deployment this summer on Devon Island in Nunavut, Canada.”

The Mars Society will be holding its Annual Convention at Ryerson University in Toronto, Canada, from August 10-13. This exciting conference is packed with fascinating talks and lectures by the world’s leading experts on Mars Exploration, exhibits, panels, debates and other wonderful opportunities to meet and interact with people from all over the world. The Education Task Force is organizing a half day Teacher Workshop that will focus specifically on Mars Education. This workshop, which will take place on Friday, August 11th during the afternoon, will be centered on how to design, plan and implement an Interdisciplinary Project: a Mars Base.

On the weekend of April 22nd the Mars Society steering committee met in Denver and Boulder, Colorado. The meeting was in part to discuss the progress of the Flashline Arctic Research Station.
